Travel Day 2
After 32 hours travel we arrived in Rome at 7:00 a.m. importanty the bikes travelled well and we made our way out to the Uber stand as we didn't feel like managing the train trip in to Rome. I thought I wass being spot on when I ordered a van, however when it arrived it was a van with fixed seats and no place for two bike boxes! So, as one does in these situations you break open the bike box and place the various components in the space behind the rear seats where it only just fitted.
We were takken right to the Hostel and Peter managed to organise an early check in which was great. I assembled the bike on the footpath outside the hostel as our room was on the fourth floor and popped it out the back.
Stephen who had arrived the night before us had spent Monday night at a hotel near the airport rode in to our hostel at about 12:30. Once he was settled in we went out for a walk around Rome taking in some of the sites - there are simply too many historical sites to mention and they are everywhere - it is amazing to think that they have survived as they have throuogh to the present day.
I wore my new sandalls for the walk. Mistake! By the time I made it back to the Hostel there were three or four hot spots beginning to develop on the soles of my feet! Just as well the walk was not longer that the 6 km that it was.
While I was feeling great when I got off the plane after the 14 hour flight to Rome and the 12 hour flight before that and the 4 hour flight before that by about lunchtime I was beginning to fade.
We had pizza on the rooftop here at the Hostel overlooking Rome and by 7:30 I had crashed. As expected I was wide awake at 11:30 p.m. so decided to map out a route out and round the touristy sites in Rome that we could do on our bikes. Stephen and Peter helped sort out what we could go and see the next morning.
